Some of us loved Maria Victoria’s first album, Asi Soy Yo, from 2002, a rocking son/salsa slab of Cuban funkiness. Along comes Santa Lucia, and damn, this is someone who can sing, and while Asi Soy Yo was the sound of a sonera working out with a house wrecking band, Santa Lucia is much more programmatic, much more thought out, and finally more a work of art and less a document of fundamental music making. |
